Why It Matters

Connecticut’s 10¢ bottle deposit was created to encourage recycling and reduce waste. But despite the financial incentive, many people still toss redeemable bottles in the trash or let bags pile up until they’re too overwhelming to deal with.

That’s not because they don’t care—it’s often because there’s no system in place to make recycling a regular habit.

The good news? With just a few adjustments, bottle recycling can become a natural, easy part of your weekly routine—whether you live alone, have a busy family household, or run a small business.

1. Set Up a Simple, Visible Recycling Station

One of the easiest ways to start is by creating a go-to spot for redeemable bottles. This could be a bin under the sink, a box in the garage, or a designated container in the mudroom.

Keep it labeled and separate from your regular trash or mixed recycling. This helps keep redeemables from getting contaminated (for example, with food waste or non-refundable containers like milk jugs or wine bottles).

If your space is tight or you need something more practical, consider using a box with a lid or bag inside a crate to reduce clutter and make it easy to carry.

2. Make It a Household Effort

Habits are easier to build when everyone’s involved. Assign simple recycling tasks to family members:

  • Kids can rinse and sort bottles
  • Teens can tally up how many you’ve collected
  • Adults can schedule pickups or take the bags out

You can even track your refund amount as a family goal—like a “bottle fund” for pizza night, back-to-school supplies, or fun treats.

3. Don’t Wait Too Long—Create a Schedule

Letting bottles pile up creates clutter and makes recycling feel like a burden. Instead, build recycling into your calendar—just like cleaning, trash day, or grocery runs.

Try:

  • Weekly collection for larger households
  • Every 2–3 weeks for average users
  • Once a month if your volume is light

Setting a reminder helps keep your system consistent and manageable.

4. Know What’s Redeemable (and What’s Not)

Not all recyclables are created equal. In Connecticut, only bottles and cans marked with “CT 10¢” are eligible for redemption.

Containers like milk cartons, wine bottles, or sports drink jugs may still be recyclable, but they aren’t eligible for a refund. Keeping these separate from your redeemables helps prevent contamination—and ensures you get your full payout when they’re processed.

How Recap Recycling Makes This Even Easier

Once you’ve built a basic system, Recap Recycling can take it to the next level.

We’re not a redemption center—we’re a pickup service for redeemable bottles and cans. Whether you’re a household or a small business, we make the process faster, cleaner, and far more convenient.

Here’s how:

  • We come to you – No driving, sorting machines, or long lines
  • Zelle payments sent every Friday – You get paid quickly and directly
  • 50-bottle minimum – Encourages regular recycling without overwhelming your space
  • We offer indoor recycling boxes – A cleaner, easier way to store redeemables
  • We accept pickups in towns outside our PSA – If certain requirements are met, we can still service non-primary areas. Click here to learn what is required.
  • Mixed containers? No problem – We’ll still collect your bag, but separating redeemables helps us process faster

Our goal is to take the burden out of recycling so that more people can do it consistently—and feel good about it.
